MEDIA ADVISORY: Press Conference on Passage of Article 23 in Hong Kong

(Washington, D.C.)— Members of the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) will conduct a press conference with other members of Congress and civil society groups to discuss the implications of the Safeguarding National Security Bill (a.k.a. Article 23 legislation) on Friday, March 22nd at 1:15pm (EDT).

CECC Chairs Representative Christopher Smith (R-NJ) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) will be joined by Frances Hui of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation (CFHK) and Anna Kwok of the Hong Kong Democracy Council (HKDC) and other members of civil society groups. The CECC Chairs will be joined by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). All CECC Commissioners are also invited to attend.

The CECC Chairs and the leadership of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party recently issued a letter opposing Article 23 legislation and calling on the Department of State to escalate the travel advisory for Hong Kong and sanction officials “who have played an instrumental role in carrying out Beijing’s bidding to undermine democratic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong.”

The press conference will be livestreamed on the CECC's YouTube channel.
