Senator Sherrod Brown

Senator Sherrod Brown, Chairman

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown is a long-time advocate for human rights, fair trade, global public health, and democracy. As a member of the Commission, Senator Brown has sought to hold China accountable for its commitments under international human rights standards, international trading obligations, and China’s own laws and to promote the rule of law on issues of vital importance to U.S. national interest. During the 112th Congress (2011-2012), Senator Brown presided over bipartisan hearings on the tenth anniversary of China’s entry into the World Trade Organization, working conditions in Chinese factories, the impact of China’s Internet censorship on human rights and fair trade, and China’s harsh treatment of Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, human rights lawyers, and political dissidents. He also advocated on behalf of Uyghurs and victims of the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

In addition to his work on the Commission, Senator Brown has frequently urged action to combat China’s unfair trade practices and level the playing field for American workers and businesses.  He was the lead sponsor of the Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act, a bipartisan bill to address Chinese currency manipulation that passed the U.S. Senate in 2011.

Senator Brown has served on the Commission since 2002 and was appointed chair on February 7, 2013.
