Amid the current economic downturn, and as a number of important anniversaries approach, Chinese official concern with social stability appears to be on the rise. How significant a challenge does ensuring stability pose to China today? How concerned should the United States be about stability in China? Will the Chinese government's concern with ensuring stability affect China's implementation of international human rights standards and the rule of law?
