Education Ministry Officials in Guangming Daily: "Firmly Grasp the Initiative in Online Political Ideological Education"

The following is a partial CECC staff translation of an article that Ministry of Education officials authored, entitled "Comprehensively Strengthen the Establishment of University Campus Networks; Firmly Grasp the Initiative in Online Political Ideological Education." The article appeared in the September 12 edition of the Guangming Daily, the official newspaper of the Beijing Communist Party Central Committee.

The development and popularization of Internet technology has also brought with it some new problems. Online information mixes the good and the bad, and where there is a large amount of progressive, healthy, and beneficial information, there is also quite a bit of reactionary, superstitious, and obscene content. Harmful information online is severely poisoning the souls of college students, and irresponsible expression online easily brings with it ideological confusion, and creates a severe challenge for college students' political ideological education. How to use positive and healthy ideological culture to capture the Internet battlefield and prevent people with ulterior motives from using the Internet to disseminate incorrect ideology and information, and resist infiltration by enemy forces and evil cult organizations has already become an important and pressing question for university political ideological education.

. . .
Grasp the campus public sentiment situation, effectively guide online public opinion. . . We should integrate schools' periodicals, radio, television and other traditional media resources, and enrich online propaganda content and form online public opinion emphasis that is united and positive. Organize ranks of online commentators, embrace hot topics and take the initiative to write postings and effectively guide online public opinion.

. . .
We should take affirmative action to strengthen administration, and strive to strengthen the unified and specialized management of on-campus Web sites and Web site users in accordance with the mechanisms formulated in relevant national Internet administration regulations, particularly with respect to the administration of campus BBSs, to take strict precautions against the dissemination of harmful information online.
